Abstract

The study aims to investigate the difficulties small-town merchants encounter in competing with larger stores. It is essential to comprehend these difficulties if small enterprises are to remain sustainable. By examining the experiences, opinions, and tactics of regional retailers, this study aims to shed light on the supply chain dynamics of the retail industry in small towns. This study aims to improve small merchants' long-term viability and competitiveness by identifying successful methods. By focusing on social and environmental implications, the Triple Bottom Line Concept hypothesis is utilized to assess corporate success beyond financial measures. The difficulties small stores in small towns have competing with larger merchants is the issue the study attempts to solve. These difficulties include those related to cost, promotion, financing availability, technology integration, and rivalry with larger retailers. To assist small businesses succeed in a cutthroat retail environment, targeted solutions and support systems must be developed after taking into account and resolving these challenges. Together, community organizations, legislators, and business stakeholders may put policies into place that are specifically designed to meet the requirements of small merchants, creating an atmosphere that is favorable to their expansion and prosperity. By shedding light on these issues, potential solutions, and emerging trends, the study hopes to strengthen the position of small merchants and improve the social and economic standing of small towns. These topics are applied to the study to comprehend the effects of operations on local communities and the sustainability of the supply chain. The goal of the study is to determine how companies may use sustainable resources, manage their supply chains ethically, and stop doing things that harm the environment or the communities in which they operate. The study also looks at how supply chain dynamics could affect small merchants' social and economic standing in small communities. Qualitative research is used in the technique, namely structured interviews with small merchants to obtain in-depth information and conduct thematic data analysis in a small town at Kuala Pilah. The respondents are from the owners of small retail shops in Kuala Pilah. With a focus on the effects of big supermarkets and hypermarkets on small merchants, the research attempts to advance knowledge of the tactics, obstacles, and emerging trends that influence the viability and competitiveness of small enterprises in small towns. It looks at how small retailers compete with larger retailers and examines the roles and difficulties they have in doing so. It also looks for best practices that small retailers may use to stay competitive and secure their long-term viability.
