The Factor of Motivation in Learning English Language among Pakistani Learners

Abstract

English language is the second and official language of Pakistan. It is taught and learnt in instructed environment for ensuing particular targets among learners. Therefore, motivation plays noteworthy part in learning target language i.e., English Language. It has been observed that number of issues rise in developing motivation among students during Second language learning i.e., out dated syllabus, lack of teachers’ training, particular educational policies and lack of programs for students’ counselling. The factors are exercised almost in all educational institutes but instead of spreading same level of knowledge students do not attain the same level of achievements in learning a foreign language. It exercises the challenging environment not for learners also teachers to teach second language in multicultural society. In order to critically examine the foreign language learning in Pakistani context, this study needs to explore the role, nature of motivation, its various factors, the influence of teachers on learner’s motivation, motivating environment and anxiety that students face in attaining the second language class. The study is conducted in the context of Sindh region, Pakistan. A set of questionnaires is administered using google form to obtain responses from 16 English teachers regarding students’ motivation parameters to be assessed by them. Questions are designed to know teachers’ observation as well. The data was analysed through quantitative method.

The study proposed that L2 teachers play one of the most influential roles to help students engage and persist in the long process of second language acquisition. Therefore, researchers have designed the questionnaire/ survey form was asked to fill 16 English teachers i.e., affiliated with college, university and schools. The result describes motivation a positive energy among learners; whenever is developed among learners; they not only have desire to learn but creates environment to learn for all who are associated with them. Some do not show the same results because of the most dissatisfying factor is assessment system. In the end, second language learning would have merely a short-term goal of achieving high marks among learners. The results submits that teachers need to put a great deal of thought into learning programs which sustain and boost students’ interest and help them to achieve their goal.
