Author Guidelines for the International Journal of Communication and Media Studies (IJCMS)

1. Overview

The International Journal of Communication and Media Studies (IJCMS) is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal that publishes high-quality original research articles, review papers, and concept papers in the broad fields of communication, media, and related disciplines. The journal is published twice a year, in June and December. All submissions must follow the guidelines outlined in this document and the official manuscript template.

2. Language

Manuscripts must be written in English or Malay, using clear, concise, and academically appropriate language.


3. Article Types and Word Count

IJCMS accepts the following article types:

  • Research Articles
    Between 4,500 – 6,000 words (including references, tables, and appendices). These present original empirical or theoretical research in communication and media studies.

  • Concept Papers
    Between 3,000 – 5,000 words (including references). These discuss theoretical models, frameworks, or propose new perspectives in the field.


4. Manuscript Format

  • Font: Times New Roman, size 12

  • Spacing: Single

  • Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides

  • Paper Size: A4

  • File Format: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)

  • Citation Style: APA 7th Edition

  • Page Limit: Maximum of 25 pages, including references

5. Manuscript Structure

Manuscripts should be organized as follows:

a. Title Page

  • Concise and descriptive title

  • Full names of all authors

  • Institutional affiliations with complete postal addresses

  • Corresponding author designation (marked with an asterisk *) and email address

b. Abstract

  • Structured abstract of 150–250 words, covering purpose, method, findings, and implications

  • No citations or undefined abbreviations

c. Keywords

  • 3–5 relevant keywords, separated by commas

d. Main Body

  • Introduction (including background, literature review, and research objectives)

  • Methodology

  • Results / Findings

  • Discussion

  • Conclusion

e. Acknowledgements

  • Recognize funding bodies, institutions, or individuals who contributed but are not listed as authors
    Example: This work was supported by [Funding Agency] under Grant No. [XXXXX].

f. Conflict of Interest Statement

  • Declare any potential conflicts
    Example: The authors declare no conflicts of interest related to this publication.

g. Ethics Statement

  • Required for studies involving human participants, animals, or sensitive data
    Example: This research was approved by the [Name of Ethics Committee], Ref No. XXX.
    If not applicable: This research did not involve human or animal participants.

h. Data Availability Statement

  • Indicate where and how data can be accessed
    Example: The data supporting this study are available from the corresponding author upon request.

i. References

  • Follow APA 7th edition formatting

  • All in-text citations must appear in the reference list and vice versa

j. Tables and Figures

  • Insert tables and figures within the text, near where they are first mentioned

  • Number them sequentially (Table 1, Figure 1, etc.)

  • Include titles and, where applicable, sources

  • If reusing materials, obtain permission and cite appropriately

6. Submission Process

Manuscripts must be submitted via the journal’s official email or online submission portal (link provided on the website). A cover letter should accompany all submissions.

7. Peer Review Process

IJCMS follows a double-blind peer review process. Authors must respond to reviewer comments and submit revised manuscripts within 2–4 weeks. Failure to revise within the given timeframe may result in withdrawal of the manuscript.

8. Open Access and Copyright

All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right to publish.

9. Ethical Practices

IJCMS adheres to strict publication ethics. Plagiarism, falsification of data, or unethical authorship practices will result in rejection or retraction.

10. Retraction and Withdrawal

Manuscripts can be withdrawn before acceptance upon written request. Retractions after acceptance will only be considered under exceptional and justified circumstances.

11. Proofreading and Production

Upon acceptance, a final proof will be sent to the corresponding author. Only one round of corrections is permitted. Delays in returning proofs may postpone publication.

12. Privacy Statement

All personal information provided by authors will be used solely for editorial and publishing purposes and will not be disclosed to third parties.

13. Metadata and Discoverability

Articles are indexed with complete metadata (title, authors, abstract, keywords) to ensure accessibility in academic databases and search engines.

14. Archiving and Preservation

All published articles are digitally preserved through the IJCMS archiving system and partner repositories to ensure long-term accessibility.
