Transforming Malaysia’s Automotive Industry Through Strategic New Product Development and Innovation Capability
Abstract
Malaysia’s automotive industry continues to face increasing pressure to strengthen its technological capability, improve product innovation, and enhance competitiveness within a rapidly changing market environment. This article examines how strategic new product development and innovation capability can support the transformation of the Malaysian automotive industry by integrating product development processes, technological and digital capabilities, market intelligence, customer knowledge, and organisational innovation capability. The analysis identifies four major challenges involving the complexity and uncertainty of automotive NPD, technological and digital capability gaps, difficulties in translating market intelligence into customer relevant innovation, and organisational capability barriers that limit sustainable competitive performance. The discussion demonstrates that successful automotive transformation requires firms to balance structured NPD processes with flexibility, integrate digital technology with organisational learning, strengthen customer oriented innovation, and develop stronger collaboration across organisational functions. Strategic suggestions emphasise the establishment of adaptive NPD systems, continuous technological and digital capability development, systematic integration of market intelligence, and the creation of organisation wide innovation capability. Overall, the article concludes that sustainable transformation cannot depend solely on manufacturing expansion or technology investment. Malaysian automotive firms need to continuously combine technological knowledge, market understanding, organisational learning, employee capability, and strategic product development to create differentiated products, improve market responsiveness, strengthen industrial upgrading, and achieve sustainable competitive performance.
