Abstract

Warehouse management has evolved from a traditional storage function into a strategic component that contributes significantly to overall supply chain performance. This article examines the role of strategic warehouse management in responding to a changing business environment characterised by increasing operational complexity, technological advancement, changing customer expectations, supply chain disruptions, and growing sustainability concerns. The article adopts a conceptual approach by reviewing and synthesising existing literature related to warehouse operations, digital technologies, supply chain integration, resilience, and sustainable warehouse management. The analysis identifies several major challenges, including inefficient warehouse processes, difficulties in technology adoption, fragmented information and coordination, complex customer fulfilment requirements, and increasing exposure to supply chain disruptions. Particular attention is given to digitalisation, automation, Internet of Things technologies, and Industry 4.0 as important developments that can strengthen warehouse visibility, accuracy, connectivity, and responsiveness. The article also emphasises that effective warehouse performance depends on stronger integration between warehouse activities and other supply chain functions. Furthermore, resilience and environmental sustainability are identified as essential considerations for maintaining long term supply chain performance under uncertain business conditions. Strategic recommendations include integrated warehouse planning, balanced performance measurement, appropriate technology adoption, stronger information sharing, improved supply chain coordination, flexible fulfilment capabilities, and environmentally responsible warehouse practices. Overall, strategic warehouse management can strengthen operational efficiency, responsiveness, resilience, and sustainable supply chain performance when warehouse resources and capabilities are effectively aligned with broader organisational and supply chain objectives.
