Ergonomic Work Design and Its Influence on Healthcare Professionals’ Well-being and Performance
Abstract
Healthcare professionals operate in complex work environments characterised by physical demands, cognitive workload, technological requirements, psychosocial pressures, and challenging organisational conditions. These factors have important implications for employee wellbeing and the ability to maintain effective professional performance. This article examines the influence of ergonomic work design on healthcare professionals’ wellbeing and performance from a broader organisational and social science perspective. It considers ergonomics not only in relation to physical workplace conditions but also as an integrated approach involving cognitive demands, work organisation, technology, workload, psychosocial conditions, and organisational support. The analysis identifies four major areas of concern: persistent physical demands and musculoskeletal risks, cognitive workload and technology related challenges, excessive workload and psychosocial strain, and limitations in organisational work design. Evidence discussed in the article indicates that poorly designed working conditions can contribute to physical strain, fatigue, burnout, information overload, reduced work ability, and difficulties in sustaining professional performance. The article proposes that healthcare organisations adopt a more integrated ergonomic approach involving systematic physical ergonomic assessment, human centred technology, appropriate workload and scheduling practices, stronger psychosocial support, and participatory ergonomic management. Overall, effective ergonomic work design can contribute to healthier working conditions while strengthening professional performance, workforce sustainability, and the overall effectiveness of healthcare organisations.
