Navigating Organisational Uncertainty Through Risk Perception and Managerial Judgement
Abstract
Organisational uncertainty presents a persistent challenge for managers as decisions are frequently made under conditions of incomplete information, ambiguous outcomes, competing priorities, and changing business environments. While formal risk management provides systematic mechanisms for identifying and evaluating potential threats, its effectiveness remains closely influenced by how managers perceive risk and exercise judgement when interpreting uncertain situations. This article explores the behavioural and managerial dimensions of organisational uncertainty by examining the interaction between risk perception, managerial judgement, cognitive processes, risk attitudes, and formal risk management practices. The analysis identifies four critical issues: subjective differences in managerial risk perception, cognitive limitations and judgement biases, instability in risk attitudes and decision behaviour, and difficulties in integrating managerial judgement with structured risk management systems. The discussion indicates that managerial responses to uncertainty are shaped not only by available evidence but also by experience, intuition, emotions, organisational context, and interpretations of potential consequences. Consequently, effective risk management requires a balanced approach that recognises the value of managerial judgement while reducing excessive dependence on subjective interpretation. The article proposes structured risk perception processes, stronger cognitive discipline, clearer organisational boundaries for risk acceptance, and closer integration between managerial judgement and formal risk management. These approaches provide a stronger foundation for improving decision quality, strengthening organisational adaptability, and enabling managers to respond more effectively to uncertainty without relying solely on quantitative assessment or individual intuition.
