Abstract

The intensifying global competition within the halal market is compelling businesses to seek sustainable competitive advantages. In this context, halal purchasing practices have emerged as a critical strategy for enhancing organizational performance. While academic research on halal supply chain management has expanded over the past decade across various industries, a significant gap remains in the specific literature addressing halal purchasing and its role within the value chain, particularly from the start of the 21st century. To address this gap, this paper conducts a systematic literature review of scholarly work on halal purchasing practices. Employing a structured methodology, relevant articles published in reputable journals between 2021 and 2025 were extracted from the Scopus database and the Web of Science (WoS) search engine, yielding a final corpus of 25 studies for analysis. The review identifies and synthesizes four primary research clusters: (1) halal traceability, (2) halal integrity assurance, (3) logistics activities and (4) halal supply chain performance. The findings of this study serve to consolidate and advance the understanding of halal principles within purchasing practices and the broader value chain. This research is intended to provide valuable insights for academics and industry practitioners, offering a structured framework to assist businesses in the halal sector in refining their purchasing management strategies for improved market performance.
